Hotel Wi-Fi is the worst part of the trip. A pocket router fixes it
Every hotel room comes with the same broken ritual: log in, again, on every device, every stay. A router the size of a deck of cards ends it for good.
Hotels have mastered almost everything. The beds are engineered, the breakfast buffets run with military precision, and somebody has folded the end of the toilet roll into a triangle for reasons lost to history. And then there is the Wi-Fi, which in even rather grand establishments operates at a standard I can only describe as aspirational. I’ve stopped being angry about it, because I found the workaround, and it lives in my bag next to the charger: a pocket travel router, the sort of thing GL.iNet and a few others make, roughly the size of a deck of cards. It is the least glamorous object I travel with and quite possibly the most useful.
The nightly ritual, itemised
Consider what hotel Wi-Fi actually asks of you. First, the captive portal — that web page demanding your room number, surname and firstborn before granting access — which must be performed separately on every device you own, and performed again when the session quietly expires at some hour chosen by malice. Then the device limit: many hotels permit two or three devices per room, a number set in an era when a traveller carried a phone and possibly a sense of optimism. Arrive with a laptop, a phone, a tablet and a smartwatch and you’re already rationing.
Then the things that can’t do portals at all. A streaming stick, a games console, a travel speaker — these devices have no browser, so the login page is a locked door with no handle. And underneath all of it, the quiet issue nobody mentions at check-in: you are sharing a network with several hundred strangers, on infrastructure with roughly the security posture of an office printer. I’m hedging there, but not by much.
What the little box actually does
Here’s the whole trick, in plain words. The travel router joins the hotel Wi-Fi as if it were a single guest — it performs the captive-portal dance once, on your behalf — and then broadcasts your own private network on the other side. Your devices don’t connect to the hotel at all. They connect to your network, with your name and your password, exactly as they do at home.
The consequences cascade pleasantly. The hotel sees one device, so the device limit is satisfied while everything you own gets online. The portal is logged in once, not seven times. The console and the streaming stick, which couldn’t face the login page themselves, connect to your network without knowing anything unusual is happening. And your devices are walled off from the several hundred strangers, because none of them are on your side of the box.
The network that follows you
The part that actually changed my travelling life is subtler. Because your devices only ever see your own network, and that network never changes, they connect automatically, everywhere. Check in, plug in the router, teach it the hotel’s Wi-Fi — a two-minute job — and every device in your bag simply wakes up online, exactly as configured, from Dubai to Bucharest to a countryside hotel where the “business centre” is a fern and a fax machine. You configure your electronics once, ever. The room changes; your network doesn’t. For anyone who works on the road, this is the difference between arriving and settling in.
Two tricks worth the price alone
First, the VPN. If you use one — and on shared hotel networks you should — the usual approach is an app on every device, each needing installation, login and occasional coaxing. Configure the VPN once on the router instead, and every device behind it is covered automatically, including the ones that can’t run VPN software at all. One setup, total coverage, no per-device ceremony.
Second, the Ethernet port, the feature that looks most old-fashioned and pays out most often. A surprising number of hotel rooms still have a wired network socket lurking behind the desk, a relic of an earlier internet. Wired connections in hotels are frequently faster and more stable than the Wi-Fi, because nobody else is using them. Plug the router into that socket and it turns the neglected wired line into your private wireless network. Some of my best hotel internet has come from a socket the housekeeping trolley had been parked in front of for years.
The honest section
Now, the case against, fairly stated. There is a learning curve. The first setup involves an admin page and a few concepts civilians reasonably never think about; it’s an evening’s tinkering at home before the first trip, not something to attempt jet-lagged at midnight. It is one more object to pack and — the modern tax on everything — one more thing to charge, though it drinks happily from the same USB-C brick as everything else in the bag.
And for plenty of trips it’s simply overkill. Two nights away with one phone? The phone’s own connection does the job, and the router stays home without hard feelings. This is a tool for a specific traveller: the one with a bag of devices, work to do from the room, and enough nights in hotels per year that the login ritual has become a genuine cost rather than an anecdote. If that’s not you, save the money and the admin page.
The pattern underneath
If it is you, though, the arithmetic is embarrassing. For less than the cost of a hotel dinner, a problem that recurs on every single trip is solved permanently. That’s the pattern I keep finding in travel gear worth owning: the good purchases don’t add an experience, they delete a recurring annoyance. The hotel will keep perfecting its toilet-roll origami. The network, I’ve stopped waiting for. I bring my own.
