The best material for travel clothes is still a sheep's
After years of trying to solve packing with cleverer bags, I eventually accepted that the real problem was the fabric — and that the fabric had been solved centuries before anyone invented the packing cube.
Let me disarm the headline before it does any damage. I am not claiming that technical fabrics are a con, or that the apparel industry has learned nothing since the loom — plainly it has, and some of what it has learned is genuinely useful. What I am claiming is narrower and, I think, harder to argue with: for the specific problem of travelling with few clothes, the best material remains the one that grows on a sheep. Merino wool is the answer to the travel-clothing question, and everything else is a partial answer wearing better marketing.
I came to this the way most people do — not through conviction but through laundry. Splitting time between Dubai and Europe means packing for two climates at once, and for years I solved this by packing more. Then I tried solving it by packing better fabric, and the whole problem got smaller.
The odour thing changes the arithmetic
The single fact that makes merino different is not warmth or softness. It is that the fibre resists odour to a degree that has to be experienced to be believed. A cotton t-shirt in Dubai’s summer is finished by mid-afternoon. A synthetic base layer is often worse — polyester holds the smell of the day the way a grudge holds a memory. A merino t-shirt, worn in the same conditions, is measured in days rather than hours. Not indefinitely, and I hedge accordingly, but genuinely days.
This one property rewrites the packing arithmetic. If a shirt survives three or four wears, you pack three shirts where you would have packed nine. Rinse one in the hotel sink in the evening — wool releases dirt in water with barely any soap — and it hangs dry overnight in all but the dampest climates. The wardrobe becomes a rotation rather than a stockpile. Every “one bag” system I have ever seen quietly depends on this; the bag gets the credit, but the fibre is doing the work.
One fabric, two climates
The second property matters just as much to anyone whose year spans real heat and real cold. Merino regulates temperature in both directions. It is a crimped, air-trapping fibre that insulates when it is cold, yet moves moisture off the skin and lets it evaporate when it is hot — which is why fine merino t-shirts are entirely wearable in Gulf summer heat, a claim that sounds wrong until you try it. The same shirt that works under a jacket in a European winter works on its own in a warm city, and that is not a claim any cotton or synthetic garment can honestly make.
Add to this that merino does not really wrinkle. It emerges from a compressed packing cube looking like clothing rather than evidence. And the good stuff simply looks like clothes — a plain merino t-shirt or jumper reads as normal attire in a restaurant or a meeting, not as hiking kit that has wandered indoors. That matters more than the outdoor industry admits. Most travel is not a trek; it is dinners, offices and airports, and technical-looking clothing is a small social tax you pay in all three.
The honest costs
Now the part the evangelists skip. Merino is expensive — noticeably, sometimes eye-wateringly so next to the cotton equivalent, and I will not pretend the gap closes quickly. It narrows over time, because you own fewer garments and wash them less violently, but you feel the price at the till, not the amortisation.
Durability is the second honest cost. Fine, lightweight merino — the kind that feels wonderful and works in heat — is a delicate thing. Thin weaves develop holes, classically at the elbows and wherever a bag strap rubs, and a beloved t-shirt can go from favourite to rag in a couple of hard seasons. Heavier weights last far longer but give up some of the hot-weather case.
Third: the care labels lie in both directions. Some insist on hand-washing garments that shrug off a machine’s wool cycle for years; others cheerfully say “machine wash” on a weave that will felt into children’s clothing the first time it meets real heat. The rule I actually follow: cold or wool-cycle wash, never the tumble dryer, and treat the label as a mood rather than an instruction.
The blend compromise
The industry’s answer to the durability problem is the merino-synthetic blend — a core of nylon or a percentage of polyester spun in with the wool. This is a genuine compromise rather than a cynical one. Blended socks and t-shirts last dramatically longer, hold their shape better and often cost less. The price is a partial surrender of the two headline virtues: blends smell sooner than pure merino and handle heat slightly worse, roughly in proportion to the synthetic content.
My own settlement: blends where abrasion is the enemy — socks above all, which are ground between foot and shoe all day — and high merino content where the skin contact and the odour resistance matter most, meaning t-shirts and anything worn in serious heat. There is no virtue in purity for its own sake. There is only the question of which failure mode you would rather buy.
Converting the wardrobe, in order
Nobody should replace a wardrobe in one go, both because of the cost and because you want to test the thesis on your own skin. The order that works: socks first. They are the cheapest entry point, the difference is felt within a day, and merino-blend socks are the closest thing travel gear has to a free win — warm when wet, unsmelly for days, dry overnight on a towel rail. Then t-shirts, which is where the packing arithmetic really turns, because shirts are the bulk of what anyone packs. Then underwear, then the mid-layer — a merino jumper replaces both the fleece and the “smart enough for dinner” layer — and eventually, if you are as far gone as I am, everything down to the beanie.
What survives of cotton
And cotton? In my bag it survives as exactly one garment: the shirt I wear on arrival day. There is a particular pleasure in a crisp cotton shirt when you have just landed, showered and have laundry infrastructure ahead of you rather than behind — cotton is lovely fabric with a support crew. That is precisely its limitation. It is a fabric for people near a washing machine, and the entire point of travelling light is that you are not.
So the wardrobe I carry now is mostly grown rather than engineered, which still strikes me as faintly absurd. Decades of material science, and the winning move for anyone living out of a bag is the fibre a sheep evolved for standing on a wet hillside in all weathers. As I write this, nothing synthetic has caught it where it counts. The sheep, it turns out, was the original one-bag traveller.
